Let's discover the Amazon together!

11.03.2025

The Amazon rainforests make up half of all the tropical forests on the planet. Their area is twice the size of India and extends across eight countries and French Guiana. Every tenth species on the planet lives in the Amazon basin.

Four hundred billion trees grow here. During photosynthesis, they release water vapor, from which rain clouds are formed. Thus, the Amazon forests partly provide themselves with life-giving moisture!

Jaguars, the largest cats in the Americas, are a symbol of the Amazon. These animals not only develop speeds of up to 80 km/h on land, but also climb trees and swim perfectly, holding their breath underwater.

The Amazon forests are home to the largest rodents on the planet - capybaras. The ability to stay underwater for up to 5 minutes often saves their lives! Here you can see hummingbirds, toucans, hoatzins and macaws, sloths and spectacled bears, giant armadillos, Brazilian otters and tapirs, spider monkeys, anteaters, South American harpies, iguanas and anacondas. There are 1,300 species of birds and more than 400 species of mammals.

The ethnic wealth of the region is also incredible, represented by four hundred indigenous groups. The local population speaks 300 languages. Visiting tribes, getting to know their culture and customs is part of the program of many expeditions to the Amazon.

Luxury lodges

In the jungle there are comfortable ecolodges, for example, Kapawi Ecolodge in Ecuador, where you can get away from all your worries, do yoga, meditate, visit local healers. Staying at Treehouse Lodge, you will live at the same height as the birds. Each bungalow is equipped with a shower and everything necessary for a comfortable fusion with nature.

From the 40-meter observation tower on the territory of the Peruvian Tambopata Research Center, it is convenient to observe all the representatives of the jungle. Here, for thirty-five years, they have been studying macaws, which flock to feast on clay, delighting the guests of this lodge with an incredibly colorful spectacle.

On the border with the Yasuni National Park in Ecuador, there is La Selva Eco-Lodge & Retreat, which offers multi-day excursion programs for the whole family, including combined tours with the Galapagos.

The luxurious Ecuadorian Mashpi Lodge is equipped with an observation deck 26 m high, from where you can watch the life of the forest through binoculars. You can also soar above the treetops on a cable car and suspended bicycles, hike to thirty waterfalls and swim in the pools at their foot, visit a scientific laboratory, do yoga on a platform in the treetops and visit an open-air spa.

River cruises on houseboats

Such cruises on floating hotels Delfin are in the Relais & Châteaux portfolio. Guests are offered three luxury houseboats that cruise the Pacaya-Samiria Nature Reserve in Peru. Delfin I with four cabins with panoramic windows and spacious terraces, Delfin II with 14 cabins with an observation deck and a lecture hall, and Delfin III with 22 cabins with panoramic windows, a swimming pool, a spa and a fitness center. The cruise program includes boat trips with nature guides, morning walks in the jungle, kayaking, watching river pink dolphins and birds, night safaris and a visit to an animal rescue center.

Cruises on a luxury houseboat from Jungle Experiences allow you to fully immerse yourself in the world of Amazonia: watch pink dolphins, fish for piranhas, see the forest from the height of suspension bridges, participate in the procedure of tree planting, visit local communities and visit shamans.

Combined tours: even more impressions!

Cruises on the Amazon are often combined in one trip with other iconic places of Latin America: Machu Picchu and Iguazu Falls on the Brazilian and Argentine side, Rio de Janeiro with a visit to the famous Selarón staircase, Pan de Azucar, Maracana stadium, Copacabana beach, helicopter excursions over the city and the coast. In Ecuador, the Amazon can be combined with the Galapagos and Quito, as well as with the Avenue of Volcanoes in the Andes. And this is an incredibly fascinating destination.

The high-mountain Avenue of Volcanoes unites forty volcanoes that stretch for 200 km. It is known as the “land of hundreds of microclimates”, where the tropics and glaciers coexist. And it was named an alley more than 200 years ago by the German geographer and traveler Alexander von Humboldt, who thoroughly explored South America. He counted so many volcanoes here that the comparison was born by itself.

Here is the highest point of the country - the Chimborazo volcano (6,310 m), which many climbers dream of conquering. There is also its own Fujiyama - the Cotopaxi volcano, the second highest (5,897 m), perfectly symmetrical in shape. For many centuries, the local population considered Cotopaxi the abode of the gods of rain. Now in this national park you can go hiking, cycling or horseback riding, watch deer, guanacos and Andean condors. Less common are pumas, spectacled bears and Andean foxes, as they avoid people.

At the foot of the Tungurahua volcano is the city of Baños - the unofficial capital of extreme recreation in Ecuador. Its full name is “Baños de Agua Santa,” or “Holy Water Baths,” which is exactly what it sounds like, as there are rivers and dozens of waterfalls here, and mineral-rich hot springs are great for relaxing after horseback riding, rafting, rappelling down waterfalls, bungee jumping, or climbing icy volcano slopes. The city has a church dedicated to Our Lady of the Holy Water, which attracts pilgrims from all over the country, as it is considered miraculous.
