Wellington sits at the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island, between green hills and a sheltered harbour. The capital is compact enough to explore on foot: a walk through the centre can lead from the waterfront to museums, cafés and independent shops. It offers an introduction to New Zealand’s culture while keeping the landscape close at hand.

Start along the waterfront and visit Te Papa, the national museum, for a deeper understanding of the country’s history and culture, including Māori heritage. Afterwards, explore the cafés and shops around Cuba Street or choose a restaurant near Courtenay Place. The historic Wellington Cable Car climbs from the city centre to a viewpoint over the harbour, with the Botanic Garden nearby.

Wellington rewards time beyond its central streets. At Zealandia, visitors can learn about efforts to restore native wildlife and habitats. A guided Wētā Workshop experience reveals how film props and costumes are made. When the weather invites a longer walk, spend time at Oriental Bay or head towards the rugged southern coast. Each offers a different view of a city shaped by its setting as much as by its creative life.

Allow two or three days to explore Wellington without rushing. The city is also a departure point for ferries across Cook Strait to the South Island, making it a useful stop on a wider New Zealand journey. Yana Luxury Travel can help arrange a hotel, guided experiences and onward travel around the pace and interests of your trip.
