Planning a holiday in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic combines long beaches, full-service resorts, tropical landscapes and historic cities. A trip can focus entirely on relaxing by the sea or include islands, waterfalls, national parks and the colonial streets of Santo Domingo.

The country’s regions differ in coastline, atmosphere and hotel style. Choosing the right area is therefore just as important as selecting the right property.

Choosing the right resort area

Punta Cana offers the country’s widest selection of resorts, including family-friendly properties and adults-only retreats. It is a practical choice for a first visit, a family holiday, golf and easy access to nature parks and organised excursions.

La Romana lies on the southern Caribbean coast. Travellers choose the area for its quieter resort atmosphere, golf courses, marinas and convenient access to Saona and Catalina islands.

Samaná suits those looking for tropical scenery, smaller beaches and nature-focused experiences. Humpback whale-watching trips operate between January and March. On the northern coast, Puerto Plata combines Atlantic beaches with outdoor activities and regional history.

When to travel

December to April is generally the driest and most comfortable period, with lower humidity and a reduced chance of prolonged rainfall.

Conditions become hotter and more humid from May to November. Rain is more frequent but often falls in short tropical showers. The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, making flexible booking conditions, suitable insurance and an up-to-date forecast particularly important for summer and autumn travel.

Creating the right itinerary

What to check before choosing a hotel

All-inclusive arrangements vary considerably between properties. Before booking, check the age and condition of the rooms, beach width, water access, restaurant policies, children’s facilities, quiet areas and transfer time from the airport.

Families may need connecting rooms, an age-appropriate children’s club and a safe, convenient beach area. Couples can consider adults-only hotels, private villas or smaller resorts offering a more secluded setting.

Choosing a travel format

For a relaxed beach holiday, staying in one coastal region is usually the most convenient option. Travellers who want a broader view of the country can combine a resort stay with Santo Domingo, Samaná or the natural landscapes of the island’s central region.

A tailored itinerary brings flights, transfers, accommodation and activities into one plan while accounting for the season, family composition and preferred pace of travel.
