Tailor-made journeys through Chile

Chile stretches from the Atacama Desert to the glaciers of Patagonia, making it impractical to experience the entire country in one journey. Most itineraries combine two or three regions connected by domestic flights. Twelve to sixteen days are recommended for Santiago, Atacama and Patagonia, with sufficient time allowed for connections and changing weather.

Santiago and the wine valleys

Santiago is Chile’s principal transport hub and the natural starting point for exploring the central region. One or two days allow time for the historic centre, contemporary districts, museums and restaurants presenting modern Chilean cuisine.

The Maipo, Casablanca and Colchagua valleys are known for their wineries, distinctive architecture and structured tasting programmes. The choice of valley depends on the wider route and preferred wine varieties. Estate visits should be confirmed in advance, with a car and driver arranged for the day. Valparaíso, with its hills, funiculars and historic neighbourhoods, can also be added to the programme.

The Atacama Desert

San Pedro de Atacama provides access to the Moon Valley, salt flats, high-altitude lagoons, the El Tatio geysers and the Puritama hot springs. Clear air and limited cloud cover have also made the region an important destination for astronomical observation.

At least four nights should be allowed for Atacama. Several excursions reach considerable elevations, so the first days should not be overloaded with demanding activities. Temperatures can vary significantly between day and night, even during warmer months.

Patagonia and Torres del Paine

Torres del Paine National Park brings together granite peaks, open steppe, turquoise lakes and the Grey Glacier. A stay can include guided walks of varying difficulty, horse riding, wildlife observation and journeys across the lakes. Lodge selection should consider location, included excursions and transfer times.

The principal travel season runs from November to March, although strong winds and sudden weather changes can occur at any time. Four or five nights provide a more complete experience of the region.

Rapa Nui and route planning

Rapa Nui can be added as a separate part of the journey for its moai, volcanic landscapes and Polynesian culture. Special regulations apply to archaeological sites, making advance arrangements for visits and guiding essential.

Atacama can be visited throughout the year, the central wine valleys are particularly rewarding in spring and around harvest time, while Patagonia is most often explored during the Chilean summer. Flight schedules and the sequence of regions should be checked for the selected dates.
