Zanzibar holidays: choosing the right coast and hotel

Zanzibar combines Indian Ocean beaches with Swahili culture, historic Stone Town and a varied choice of water-based activities. The island’s coasts offer distinctly different experiences. Beach conditions, tides, the atmosphere of each area and access to restaurants or activities should all be considered before selecting a hotel.

Which part of Zanzibar should you choose?

The north and northwest, including Nungwi and Kendwa, suit travellers who want easier access to swimming throughout the day. Tidal changes are generally less pronounced here, while restaurants, boat trips and tourist facilities are readily available. Kendwa tends to feel quieter, whereas Nungwi usually has a livelier atmosphere.

The east and southeast coasts are known for wide beaches and more noticeable tides. Paje and Jambiani are good choices for kitesurfing, active days and a relaxed coastal setting. At low tide, the ocean may retreat a considerable distance, making it important to check the exact beach conditions near each hotel.

The northeast appeals to travellers looking for a quieter resort-based stay. Tides still matter, so hotel selection should consider the beach’s position, swimming conditions and whether the property has sheltered areas or alternative facilities.

When to visit Zanzibar

June to October is often selected for beach holidays because conditions are generally drier and less humid. January and February can also be suitable, although temperatures and humidity tend to be higher.

The longer rainy period usually falls between March and May. Shorter showers may occur in November and December, but they do not necessarily last all day. Weather patterns vary, so the travel dates and preferred activities should be considered together rather than relying on a rigid seasonal rule.

Experiences beyond the beach

Stone Town deserves a full day or a short stay of one or two nights. Its historic townscape reflects African, Arab, Indian and European influences and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other options include Jozani Forest, spice experiences, snorkelling, diving and boat trips. Activities should be planned around the season, sea conditions and the location of the hotel rather than added as a generic excursion list.

Combining Zanzibar with a Tanzania safari

Zanzibar is often the final stage of a mainland Tanzania itinerary. A domestic flight makes it possible to move from a safari in the national parks to several slower days by the ocean without lengthy overland transfers.

Hotel category is only one part of the decision. The coast, tides, meal plan, airport transfer time and preferred balance between privacy and activities are equally important. A well-planned itinerary matches these details to the traveller’s priorities.
