Luxury holidays on La Digue
La Digue is a small granitic island located close to Praslin in the Seychelles. It has no airport, and bicycles remain the principal way to explore. Its relaxed pace, small-scale hotels and beaches framed by massive granite boulders make it well suited to romantic escapes and tailor-made island-hopping journeys.
A stay of at least three or four nights is preferable to a short day trip. Once the daytime visitors have departed, the roads and beaches become quieter, while a longer stay provides time to explore different parts of the island.
The beaches of La Digue
The island’s best-known landmark is Anse Source d’Argent, located within L’Union Estate. The beach is distinguished by pale sand, a shallow lagoon and sculpted granite formations. Swimming conditions depend on the tide, and the area can become busy during the middle of the day, so the timing of each visit should be planned carefully.
Grand Anse, Petite Anse and Anse Cocos lie along the southeastern coast and are connected by walking trails. The ocean can be rough on this side of La Digue, with potentially strong currents. Visitors should follow local warnings and select suitable areas for swimming.
Hotels and island routes
Le Domaine de L’Orangeraie Resort & Spa provides an upscale base near La Passe, with convenient access to the harbour, beaches and the island’s principal routes. La Digue also has a collection of smaller hotels and villas offering different locations, service levels and access to the coast.
An island itinerary can include cycling through L’Union Estate, visiting Veuve Reserve to look for the rare Seychelles black paradise flycatcher and walking towards the viewpoints around Nid d’Aigle.
Boat trips and transfers
Snorkelling and diving excursions operate from La Digue to Coco, Félicité and the Sister Islands. Routes and suitable sites depend on weather and sea conditions.
The ferry journey from Praslin takes approximately 15 minutes. From Mahé, travellers can take a ferry or fly to Praslin before continuing by sea. Ferry tickets, baggage arrangements and connections should be confirmed in advance.
