Luxury Holidays in Pontresina

Pontresina is an Alpine resort in the Upper Engadin, set at approximately 1,800 metres beneath the Bernina Massif. Although only a few kilometres from St Moritz, it has a quieter character. The village provides a convenient base for downhill and cross-country skiing, summer hiking and journeys on the Rhaetian Railway.

Skiing on Diavolezza and Lagalb

The nearest high-altitude ski mountains are Diavolezza and Lagalb. Their upper stations stand at 2,978 and 2,893 metres respectively. Red and black pistes dominate the terrain, making this area particularly suitable for confident skiers.

When conditions permit, longer descents open against the glacier scenery of the Bernina Massif. Any route beyond secured pistes requires an assessment of avalanche conditions and the services of a qualified mountain guide. Trains on the Bernina Line connect Pontresina with the Diavolezza valley station.

Corviglia above St Moritz and Corvatsch near Silvaplana provide a broader range of pistes. These mountains are not connected to Diavolezza–Lagalb by ski runs, so daily transfers and ski itineraries should be arranged in advance.

Grand Hotel Kronenhof

Val Roseg and Morteratsch

Val Roseg begins close to the resort. In summer, visitors explore it on foot or by bicycle, while winter brings prepared walking and cross-country routes. Longer hikes continue towards the Roseg and Tschierva glaciers, with difficulty determined by the chosen distance and trail conditions.

A separate trail leads from Morteratsch station towards Morteratsch Glacier. Another classic route connects Muottas Muragl with Alp Languard, providing views across the Upper Engadin lakes and the Bernina mountains. High-level walks should always be selected according to weather, remaining snow and personal experience.

The Bernina railway

Pontresina stands on the Bernina Line, which crosses the mountain pass, passes glaciers and Lago Bianco, and continues to Tirano in Italy. Both the panoramic Bernina Express and regional trains travel along this route. Seat reservations are required for the Bernina Express.

Five to seven nights are suitable for a winter stay. June to September is generally the best period for hiking. Pontresina can be reached by rail via Chur or by a road transfer planned according to seasonal mountain-pass conditions.
