Egypt holidays: the Red Sea and Nile Valley heritage
Egypt offers two distinct travel experiences: a resort holiday on the Red Sea and a cultural journey through the Nile Valley. Travellers can focus entirely on the coast, plan a dedicated heritage itinerary or combine a beach stay with Cairo and a Nile cruise.
The choice of resort affects more than the style of the hotel. Beach access, water depth, coral reefs, wind exposure and transfer times vary considerably between locations and individual properties.
Choosing the right Red Sea resort
Sharm el-Sheikh is well suited to travellers interested in coral reefs, snorkelling and full-service resorts. Conditions differ between bays: some hotels have sandy entry into the water, while others rely mainly on jetties extending beyond the reef. A sheltered bay is particularly important for a winter stay.
Hurghada and its neighbouring resort areas provide a broad selection of hotels, including family-oriented properties with sandy beaches and resorts focused on water sports. The beach should still be assessed individually, as entry conditions vary between hotels.
Marsa Alam offers a quieter setting, extensive marine experiences and access to natural areas. Hotels are spread along a long stretch of coastline, making it important to confirm the transfer time before booking.
The best time to visit Egypt
Autumn and spring generally provide the most comfortable balance between beach time and cultural touring. Temperatures are suitable for the coast, while visits to archaeological sites are more manageable than during the peak summer heat.
From December to February, Red Sea holidays remain possible, although evenings can be cooler and exposed areas may be windy. Travellers should consider a sheltered location and heated pools when comparing winter hotels.
Summer is hot and dry on the Red Sea coast. It can work well for a resort-based holiday, but intensive sightseeing in Cairo, Luxor and southern Egypt may be demanding during the hottest part of the day.
Selecting a hotel and beach
A hotel’s official category does not guarantee convenient access to the sea. Before booking, compare:
- sandy entry versus jetty-only access;
- water depth and suitability for children;
- distance between the room and the beach;
- protection from prevailing winds;
- access to the house reef;
- family facilities;
- transfer time from the airport.
A gently shelving sandy beach is generally more practical for younger children. Travellers prioritising snorkelling or diving should focus on reef quality, jetty access and the standards of the local diving centre.
Combining the coast with cultural touring
A cultural itinerary can include Cairo and the Giza pyramids, followed by Luxor, Aswan or a Nile cruise. Cruising provides a convenient way to visit several sites in Upper Egypt without changing hotels each night.
Distances between the Red Sea resorts and Egypt’s principal heritage sites should not be underestimated. Allowing several dedicated days for cultural touring, with domestic flights where appropriate, is usually more comfortable than attempting a demanding day trip.
