Hurghada holidays: beaches and Red Sea resorts

Hurghada is a large resort region on the western shore of the Red Sea. It combines urban districts, extensive hotel zones, sandy beaches, boat trips, diving and full-service family resorts.

The quality and style of a stay depend on more than the hotel category. Central Hurghada, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna and the resort areas farther south offer different atmospheres, beaches, facilities and transfer times.

Choosing the right resort area

Central Hurghada suits travellers who want to combine beach time with restaurants, shops, marina walks and a lively resort atmosphere. Beach conditions vary between hotels and should be assessed individually.

Sahl Hasheesh lies south of the city and is more focused on relaxed stays in larger beachfront resorts. It can work well for couples and families who prioritise hotel facilities and a quieter setting away from the centre.

El Gouna is a separate resort town north of Hurghada, known for its lagoons, marinas, restaurants and kitesurfing facilities. Farther south, Soma Bay offers beachfront hotels, spas, golf and a broad choice of water sports.

The best time to visit Hurghada

Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable balance of beach time, boat trips and sightseeing. Conditions are less intense than during the peak summer heat, while the sea remains suitable for swimming.

Winter days are generally mild, although evenings can feel cooler. Wind can affect exposed sections of the coast, so the shelter provided by the beach location and the availability of heated pools should be considered when comparing hotels.

Summer is very hot. It works well for a resort-based holiday beside the sea, but longer excursions and outdoor activities are more comfortable when scheduled early in the day.

Selecting a hotel and beach

A private beach does not necessarily guarantee convenient swimming conditions. Before booking, compare:

  • natural sandy entry into the sea;
  • water depth close to the shore;
  • suitability for younger children;
  • access to coral reefs;
  • distance between the rooms and the beach;
  • protection from wind;
  • jetty or artificial lagoon access;
  • transfer time from the airport.

Families with younger children may prefer a gently shelving sandy beach and a compact resort layout. Travellers interested in snorkelling or diving should focus on reef access, diving-centre standards and available boat routes.

What to include in the itinerary

Boat trips from Hurghada to the Giftun Islands combine beach time with opportunities for snorkelling. Diving programmes should be selected according to the traveller’s experience and the location of the hotel.

A Red Sea stay can also be combined with Luxor. As the road journey is substantial, the cultural visit should be planned carefully, with an overnight stay considered for a more extensive programme.

Tailor-made planning helps coordinate the season, resort area, beach conditions, hotel, transfers, boat trips and cultural excursions within one practical itinerary.
