Sharm El Sheikh holidays: bays, beaches and coral reefs
Sharm El Sheikh is a Red Sea resort at the southern end of the Sinai Peninsula, known for beach holidays, snorkelling, diving and full-service resort hotels. Its coastline extends across several bays with different swimming conditions, reef access, exposure to wind and proximity to restaurants and other resort facilities.
Hotel location is as important as category. One bay may offer gently shelving sandy access, while another provides a more impressive reef but allows swimming only from a jetty. Choosing the appropriate area should therefore come before comparing individual properties.
Choosing the right bay
Naama Bay is the established resort centre, with a promenade, restaurants, shops and a lively evening atmosphere. Some hotels provide sandy sections of beach, although swimming conditions should always be checked for the individual property.
Hadaba and Ras Um Sid suit travellers who prioritise coral reefs and snorkelling. Several hotels occupy elevated coastal sites, meaning that access to the beach may involve steps, a lift or a hotel shuttle. Deep-water access is often provided by jetty.
Sharm El Maya has a relatively sheltered setting and sandy beaches. It can be considered for family stays and winter travel, although the exact entry into the sea still varies between hotels.
Sharks Bay and nearby hotel zones offer convenient access from the airport and frequently provide reef snorkelling. Nabq Bay contains large resort complexes but occupies a more exposed stretch of coast. Shallow reef flats, longer jetties and windy conditions should be considered when selecting a hotel there.
The best time to visit
Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable balance of beach time, snorkelling, diving and boat trips. Conditions are less intense than during the peak summer heat, while the sea remains suitable for extended swimming.
A winter Red Sea holiday is still possible, although evenings can feel cooler. Travellers should compare the shelter offered by each bay, the orientation of the beach and the availability of heated pools.
Summer is hot and dry. It works well for resort-based stays and early boat trips, while longer outdoor excursions are more comfortable outside the middle of the day.
Selecting a hotel and beach
Before booking, check:
- whether the beach has natural sandy access;
- if swimming is possible from shore or only from a jetty;
- water depth close to the beach;
- suitability for younger children;
- the length and condition of the jetty;
- possible sea-access restrictions during windy weather;
- access to the house reef;
- steps, lifts or shuttles between the hotel and beach;
- distance from Naama Bay and other resort areas.
Families with younger children will generally find a sheltered bay and gently shelving sandy beach more practical. Travellers focused on snorkelling or diving should prioritise reef quality, deep-water access and the standards of the diving centre.
Boat trips and excursions
Ras Mohammed National Park and the Straits of Tiran are among the principal areas for snorkelling and diving near Sharm El Sheikh. The most suitable trip depends on the traveller’s experience, sea conditions and the length of the boat journey.
A resort stay can also be combined with Cairo or a wider Sinai itinerary. Because distances are substantial, cultural touring is usually more comfortable when planned as a separate part of the journey.
Tailor-made planning helps coordinate the season, bay, beach conditions, hotel, flights, transfers and marine activities within one practical itinerary.
