Mombasa and Coast
Mombasa and Kenya Coast Holidays
Mombasa and the Indian Ocean coast
Kenya’s coast combines tropical beaches, coral reefs, marine reserves and Swahili culture. A beach stay can include Mombasa Old Town, Fort Jesus or a safari extension in south-eastern Kenya.
Choosing the right coastal area
Mombasa and the north coast
Mombasa suits travellers who want to combine the beach with historic sights and urban facilities. Resort areas north of the city offer a broad choice of hotels and convenient access to the marine park.
The south coast
The coast south of Mombasa includes quieter beach areas such as Diani. Accommodation ranges from full-service resorts to private villas, with snorkelling and boat trips widely available. Beach conditions, tides and airport transfer times should all be considered.
The best time to visit
The coast remains warm throughout the year. April and May are generally the wettest months, while shorter rains may occur later in the year. Wind and sea conditions should be checked separately when planning diving, snorkelling or kitesurfing.
