Luxury Holidays in Te Anau
Lake Te Anau, Fiordland’s great walks and the road to Milford Sound make the journey as memorable as the fjord.
Te Anau stands on the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau, beside Fiordland National Park on New Zealand’s South Island. The town looks across the water towards forested mountains and gives travellers an inviting place to stay while exploring the region. Although many visitors pass through on their way to the fiords, spending a few days here makes room for the lake, nearby walks and an easier pace between longer outings.
A lake cruise is one way to appreciate the setting. A boat trip also takes visitors to the Te Anau Glowworm Caves, one of the area’s distinctive experiences. Closer to town, choose a short walk or explore part of the Kepler Track. At the local bird sanctuary, there is a chance to see the takahē, a rare flightless New Zealand bird. These activities give Te Anau a character of its own beyond its role as a departure point.
For a trip to Milford Sound, set aside a full day from Te Anau. The road crosses remarkable mountain scenery, with places to stop before reaching the fiord for a cruise. Doubtful Sound requires a different route: trips travel via nearby Manapouri. Planning the two journeys separately allows time to appreciate each landscape without crowding the itinerary.
Te Anau offers accommodation choices that include luxury lodges, as well as the flexibility to alternate active days with time beside the lake. Yana Luxury Travel can arrange a stay and Fiordland excursions around your interests and the rest of your South Island journey.
