North Malé Atoll is the best-known surfing region in the Maldives due to its accessibility and established breaks along the eastern side of the atoll. The main surfing period generally extends from spring to autumn. Wave size and conditions vary by month, weather and break, so the programme should reflect each guest’s experience.

The best time to visit

November to April generally brings drier, sunnier weather. These months are well suited to beach holidays, snorkelling, diving and boat trips.

From May to October, brief tropical showers, stronger winds and livelier seas are possible. This period is also suitable for surfing and a range of water sports. Air and sea temperatures remain warm throughout the year.

Transfers and travel planning

Most resorts in North Malé Atoll provide direct speedboat transfers from Velana International Airport. Depending on the island, the journey usually takes between 15 minutes and one hour. Seaplane transfers are also available for some of the more distant resorts.
