Holidays in Hakone

Hakone is a mountain resort in Kanagawa Prefecture and part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The region is known for natural hot springs, traditional ryokans, volcanic landscapes and views of Mount Fuji on clear days. Its proximity to Tokyo makes Hakone easy to include in a wider journey through Japan as a one- or two-night retreat.

Lake Ashi is one of the region’s defining landmarks. Formed within a volcanic caldera, the lake is home to Hakone Shrine and offers views towards Mount Fuji from several points around its shores. Another key attraction is Owakudani, an active volcanic valley reached by the Hakone Ropeway.

Onsens, ryokans and experiences in Hakone

Natural hot springs are central to the Hakone experience. A traditional stay often combines a ryokan with an onsen and Japanese cuisine, creating a slower and more intimate contrast to time spent in Tokyo.

A journey through Hakone can also include walks around Lake Ashi, the ropeway across Owakudani, shrines, gardens and art museums. The region fits particularly well into a Tokyo — Hakone — Kyoto itinerary, adding nature, traditional hospitality and onsen culture to a broader journey through Japan.
