Kandy — Sri Lanka’s cultural capital

Surrounded by green hills in central Sri Lanka, Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhala kings and remains one of the island’s most important religious centres. The Sacred City of Kandy is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its principal landmark is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, set beside Kandy Lake within the former royal complex. A visit provides valuable insight into Sri Lanka’s Buddhist traditions and the city’s historical importance. Modest clothing covering the shoulders and knees is required, and visitors should respect the customs of an active place of worship.

Who should include Kandy in their journey

Kandy is well suited to travellers interested in history, architecture, religious heritage and Sri Lanka’s hill-country landscapes. It also provides a practical link between the ancient sites of the island’s interior and the tea-growing regions farther south.

One or two nights are usually sufficient for a first visit. A longer stay allows time to explore the temples, visit the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, walk around the lake and discover the surrounding hills at a more relaxed pace.

When to visit Kandy

Kandy can be visited throughout the year, although weather in Sri Lanka’s central hills can be changeable and rainfall occurs in different seasons. Travel dates should therefore be planned around the complete island itinerary rather than the city alone.

The annual Esala Perahera attracts particularly large numbers of visitors. Its dates vary according to the lunar calendar. Accommodation, transfers and suitable viewing arrangements should be secured well in advance when travelling during the festival period.

Choosing where to stay

Central accommodation is convenient for a short visit focused on the temples, lake and principal city sights. Properties on the surrounding hillsides offer quieter settings and wider views but may involve longer transfers on winding roads.

Hotel selection should consider location, road access and travel time as well as room category and views. A panoramic hillside setting does not always provide convenient access to central Kandy.

Adding Kandy to a Sri Lanka itinerary

Kandy combines naturally with Sigiriya and Dambulla before a journey continues into the tea country and other highland regions. A cultural itinerary can then be followed by time on the coast.
