Banff holidays in the Canadian Rockies

Banff is a mountain resort town in Alberta and a convenient base for exploring Banff National Park. Travellers come for glacier-fed lakes, snow-covered peaks, scenic roads, hiking trails and winter sports. The destination works equally well for an active itinerary or a quieter stay at a mountain hotel.

What to see and do

A summer itinerary may include walks around Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, Johnston Canyon, mountain viewpoints and scenic drives through the Rockies. Hiking routes should be selected according to experience and current trail conditions.

In winter, Banff becomes a major skiing destination. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, visitors can enjoy winter walks, snowshoeing, ice skating and time in the thermal pools.

When to visit Banff

July to mid-September is the main season for higher-elevation hiking. Snow can remain on mountain passes throughout June. The ski season generally runs from November into spring, although opening and closing dates vary between resorts.

Planning accommodation and transport

Banff is normally reached through Calgary. During the busiest periods, hotels, transfers and access to popular lakes should be arranged well in advance. Moraine Lake Road is closed to private vehicles, making a reserved shuttle or organised transfer essential.

Staying in Banff town provides convenient access to restaurants and activities, while Lake Louise offers a quieter setting closer to nature. A tailor-made itinerary helps balance hiking, skiing, scenic drives and time to relax.
