Bormio is an Alpine resort in Lombardy, northern Italy, combining high-altitude skiing, a historic town centre and thermal springs known since Roman times. It works equally well for a winter sports holiday or a summer journey through Stelvio National Park.
The Bormio ski area
The lifts reach an altitude of more than 3,000 metres. With approximately 1,800 metres between the highest and lowest points, Bormio has one of the largest skiable vertical drops in the Alps. The area includes challenging runs, beginner slopes, family snow areas, a snow park and freeride terrain.
The resort’s signature run is the Stelvio, a technically demanding course that regularly hosts Alpine Ski World Cup races. In 2026, Bormio hosted the men’s Alpine skiing and ski mountaineering competitions during the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.
Thermal spas in Bormio
Three thermal complexes provide different experiences after a day on the mountain. QC Spa Bagni Vecchi is known for its historic baths, San Martino thermal cave and pool overlooking the valley. QC Spa Bagni Nuovi occupies a 19th-century setting with indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and relaxation areas. Bormio Terme is located in the town centre and includes facilities for families with children.
Accommodation options include QC Terme Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi, QC Terme Hotel Bagni Vecchi and hotels closer to the ski lifts or historic centre. The best location depends on whether direct slope access, thermal treatments or evening walks through town are the priority.
Bormio in summer
From June to September, Bormio becomes a base for hiking and cycling in Stelvio National Park. The Stelvio, Gavia and Mortirolo mountain passes are closely associated with road cycling and the Giro d’Italia.
Five to seven nights are suitable for a winter stay combining skiing and thermal spas. Individual road transfers are usually arranged from Milan or Bergamo, with journey times planned around flight arrivals and winter road conditions.
