Victoria holidays on Vancouver Island
Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and lies at the southern end of Vancouver Island. The island should not be confused with the city of Vancouver on the mainland. Victoria combines heritage architecture, landscaped gardens, coastal scenery and the relaxed atmosphere of a compact seaside city.
Two or three days are usually sufficient for the main sights. A longer stay allows time for boat trips and a wider journey through Vancouver Island.
What to include in your itinerary
The most convenient walking routes connect the Inner Harbour, Parliament Buildings, historic streets, Beacon Hill Park and Fisherman’s Wharf. Outside the city centre, the Butchart Gardens are known for their seasonal displays and carefully designed landscapes.
Wildlife-watching boat tours also depart from Victoria. As these experiences involve animals in their natural environment, particular sightings cannot be guaranteed and sailing conditions depend on the weather.
The best time to visit
May to September is the most convenient period for walking, gardens and boat trips. July and August are generally the busiest months, making advance hotel and activity reservations advisable.
Spring is particularly attractive for garden visits, while early autumn offers a quieter city experience. Winters are milder than in many parts of Canada, although visitors should expect a greater chance of rain and wind.
Choosing a hotel and planning transport
The Inner Harbour and downtown are practical for a first stay, with major sights within walking distance. James Bay offers a quieter setting close to the waterfront and central attractions.
Victoria can be reached from Vancouver by ferry followed by a ground transfer, or by seaplane. The ferry arrives at Swartz Bay outside the city, so transfer time must be included in the itinerary. A car is unnecessary for most central stays but useful when continuing through Vancouver Island.
