Safari in Tsavo National Parks

Tsavo comprises two major national parks: Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Together they encompass open savannah, river valleys, rocky hills and volcanic landscapes. Elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and abundant birdlife may be seen, although sightings depend on the season and natural conditions.

Choosing between Tsavo East and West

Tsavo East

Tsavo East is characterised by open plains, red soil, the Galana River and the Yatta Plateau. Elephants often coat themselves in the ochre-coloured dust, creating the appearance behind Tsavo’s famous “red elephants”. The open terrain generally makes wildlife easier to observe.

Tsavo West

Tsavo West offers hillier and more varied scenery, including lava fields, Mzima Springs and the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. Its vegetation is denser, which can make wildlife more difficult to spot, but the park is particularly rewarding for its landscapes.

Planning the safari

When to visit

Safari is possible throughout the year. During drier periods, wildlife tends to gather near water and road conditions are generally easier. The rains create greener scenery, although some game-drive routes may be affected.

Choosing a lodge

Accommodation should be selected according to the chosen park and planned game drives. Because distances are considerable, several nights are advisable when combining Tsavo East and West. A Tsavo safari also works well with a stay on Kenya’s coast.
