Safari in Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park lies in the Great Rift Valley and combines a shallow alkaline lake with grassland, woodland and rocky escarpments. It is renowned for its birdlife and its protection of black and white rhinos. Giraffes, buffalo, waterbuck, zebras, lions and other wildlife may also be seen.

Together with Lakes Bogoria and Elementaita, Lake Nakuru forms part of the UNESCO-listed Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley.

Planning the experience

Flamingos and birdlife

Flamingo numbers vary as the birds move between different lakes in response to water levels and food availability. Large flocks may be present, but specific numbers cannot be guaranteed. Pelicans, herons, African fish eagles and many other waterbirds also inhabit the park.

Game drives and viewpoints

The park’s relatively compact size makes it possible to combine wildlife viewing with scenic viewpoints above the lake. Game drives are usually planned for the morning and late afternoon, when animals tend to be more active.

Planning the stay

When to visit

The park can be visited throughout the year. Drier periods generally offer easier road conditions and clearer wildlife viewing near water sources. After the rains, the landscape becomes greener, although bird numbers and access to individual routes may change.

Choosing accommodation

A lodge inside the park provides earlier access to game-drive routes. Staying in Nakuru town offers a wider choice of hotels but adds travel time to the park gates. One or two nights are generally sufficient for a well-paced visit.
