The capital of Cambodia, with a population of more than 2 million, was located at the merging site of three rivers, Mekong, Tonlesap and Bassaka. The city was founded in 1372. According to the legend, Peen's widow saw a floating tree in the Mekong River with four bronze and one stone statue of Buddha. The widow took the statues and decided to build a sanctuary for this discovery. According to the Buddhist canons, the sanctuary must be on the rise, so the widow put a small hill on which the statues found were put. Since then, this place has been considered sacred, and the Temple of Wat Pn has been erected over time, and the name built around the city has been the hill of the widow Pen. The city was recognized as the capital in 1422. Since then, Phnom Penh has experienced many important historical events. The Asian traditions, the colonial architecture, the huge Buddhist pagodas and the French style buildings were unbelievably mixed.
The capital is divided into 4 actual parts:
- South - Quarter of State Banks and Buildings
- North - most locals live here
- Central is a quarter of cozy shops, markets, pagodas
- West is an old block with narrow angles
