Ma’in Hot Springs: a thermal retreat among Jordan’s canyons
Ma’in Hot Springs, also known as Hammamat Ma’in, is a collection of hot and cool mineral springs in a mountain valley near the Dead Sea. Water descends over the rocks in thermal waterfalls and feeds natural and purpose-built pools. Some springs reach temperatures of up to 63°C, so visitors should use only designated bathing areas.
The springs are approximately 37 kilometres from Madaba and 264 metres below sea level. Ma’in works well as a short spa retreat, a stop within a wider Jordan itinerary or an addition to a stay at the Dead Sea.
Choosing the right type of stay
The springs can be visited on a day trip, although one or two nights provide a more relaxed experience. An overnight stay allows time for the thermal pools and spa treatments without arranging an immediate return to Amman or continuing a long road journey.
Accommodation immediately beside the springs is limited. Before booking, travellers should confirm access to the thermal waterfall and pools, spa opening hours, room location and current arrangements for day visitors.
The best time to visit Ma’in
Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons for combining the springs with sightseeing and outdoor activities. Summer can be extremely hot in the valley, making mornings and evenings more suitable for time outdoors.
Winter offers a striking contrast between cooler air and warm water. However, travellers should check the weather forecast and the operation of outdoor pools before arrival. Access to some natural areas may depend on rainfall and water conditions.
What to know before bathing
Water temperatures vary considerably between the springs. Visitors should enter only designated pools and follow the resort’s safety guidance. Time spent in very warm water should be increased gradually to avoid overheating.
Thermal bathing and spa treatments are intended for relaxation and should not be presented as substitutes for medical care. Travellers with cardiovascular or other health conditions should seek medical advice before using hot pools.
Combining Ma’in with a Jordan itinerary
Ma’in can be conveniently combined with Madaba, Mount Nebo and the Dead Sea. These places may be included within a wider touring programme, although a spa stay is more enjoyable when it is not overloaded with long transfers.
A tailor-made itinerary can coordinate accommodation, access to the springs, spa appointments and private transfers with the onward journey through Jordan.
