Margarita Island is one of the most famous resorts in the Caribbean Sea. This wonderful island lies 40 kilometres south of the coast of Venezuela, the southernmost part of the Caribbean sea off the equator itself.

The island of Margarita was opened by Colombia on 15 August 1498 and was named after the successor of the Spanish margarita of Austria. Indians inhabited the island were engaged in pearl mining, so Margarita is sometimes called " Animal Island " .
