Vietnam holidays: beaches, heritage and diverse landscapes

Vietnam combines tropical islands, historic cities, mountain scenery and distinctive regional cuisine. Its long, narrow geography creates different weather patterns in the north, centre and south. Choosing the right region for the month of travel is therefore essential, especially when planning a beach stay.

A first journey can combine Hanoi and Ha Long Bay with the heritage sites of Central Vietnam before continuing south. Travellers who prefer a slower pace should focus on one or two regions rather than building an itinerary around frequent domestic flights and long transfers.

Choosing the right type of journey

A cultural itinerary reveals the contrasts between Vietnam’s regions. Hanoi provides a base for exploring the north, while Hue is known for its imperial heritage and Hoi An for its preserved architecture and relaxed atmosphere. In the south, Ho Chi Minh City can be combined with a journey through the Mekong Delta.

Beach holidays require more careful seasonal planning. Phu Quoc is often best suited to winter and early-spring travel. Resorts along the central coast can offer better beach conditions during spring and summer, depending on the location. Nha Trang and Da Nang work well for travellers who want to combine the coast with restaurants, sightseeing and urban amenities.

When to visit Vietnam

Spring and autumn often provide comfortable conditions for touring Northern Vietnam. Winters can be cool and cloudy, particularly in mountain areas, while summers are generally hot, humid and rainy.

Along the central coast, spring and summer are commonly preferred for beach holidays. Some areas experience heavier rain and storms during autumn. Southern Vietnam usually has a drier period from December to April. As conditions vary significantly by region, travel dates should always be checked against the exact route and resort.

Planning the route and selecting a hotel

A journey covering several regions is best planned for around 10–14 days. Shorter trips should concentrate on one part of the country to avoid losing too much time to flights and transfers.

Families should consider sea conditions, transfer time, beach access and suitable hotel facilities. Couples may prefer a secluded resort, private villa or a cultural itinerary followed by several quiet days on the coast.

Hotel selection should take account of more than its category. Beach conditions, distance from the airport, access to restaurants and the practicality of planned excursions can significantly affect the overall experience.
