Hotel description

Heritance Kandalama is a five-star nature resort in central Sri Lanka, surrounded by tropical forest beside Kandalama Lake. The hotel is positioned within the island’s Cultural Triangle, near the Sigiriya rock fortress and five UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its location makes it suitable both for a peaceful retreat in nature and for exploring Sri Lanka’s ancient cities, temples, national parks and archaeological landmarks.

The hotel was designed by Geoffrey Bawa according to the principles of tropical modernism. Its long structure is integrated into a rocky hillside and gradually merges with the surrounding jungle. Natural stone, open corridors, water features and dense vegetation form an essential part of the architecture. Different sections overlook Kandalama Lake, Dambulla Rock, Sigiriya Rock, distant mountains and tropical forest. Teak wood, traditional rattan furniture, local artwork and restrained natural colours define the interiors.

The accommodation collection comprises 152 rooms and suites, including 15 suites. Leisure facilities include three outdoor swimming pools, a spa offering Ayurvedic and massage therapies, a 24-hour gym, cycling routes, jogging and walking trails, board games and a library. Guests can join birdwatching outings, jungle treks, visits to an ancient village and Aligala Caves, or excursions to Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and the Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks. Dining ranges from panoramic restaurants to distinctive private experiences, including a specially arranged dinner inside a natural cave.

Accommodation at Heritance Kandalama

The hotel comprises 152 rooms and suites across eight categories: Superior, Panoramic, Luxury, Luxury Panoramic, Deluxe, Suite, Luxury Suite and Royal Suite. Accommodation is divided between the Dambulla and Sigiriya wings, providing varied views over the jungle, Kandalama Lake, Dambulla Rock, Sigiriya and the surrounding mountains. Interiors continue Geoffrey Bawa’s architectural vision through teak finishes, rattan furniture, local artwork and a natural colour palette. Most categories include a private balcony. Accommodation ranges from 32 to 155 m² and offers king-size or twin bedding depending on the category. Standard amenities include air conditioning, Wi-Fi, satellite television, an in-room safe and tea and coffee facilities. Suites add generous living spaces and panoramic bathrooms equipped with 12-jet Jacuzzis.
