Lamu Island — Swahili heritage by the ocean
Lamu lies off Kenya’s northern coast, combining historic architecture, sandy beaches, boat journeys and an unhurried island atmosphere. UNESCO-listed Lamu Old Town is recognised as one of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa.
Its narrow streets, coral-stone houses, inner courtyards and carved wooden doors reflect centuries of cultural exchange between Africa, Arabia and the wider Indian Ocean region.
Choosing where to stay
Lamu Old Town
The Old Town suits travellers interested in architecture, local markets, the waterfront and everyday Swahili culture. It remains a living historic settlement and offers a more cultural experience than a secluded beach stay.
Shela and Manda Island
Shela village lies beside a long sandy beach and coastal dunes. Accommodation includes small hotels, villas and traditionally designed houses. Manda Island offers greater seclusion, although boat transfers are required for visits to Lamu and Shela.
Planning the journey
What to do
A stay may include a guided walk through the Old Town, sailing aboard a traditional dhow, boat trips between the islands and time on the beach. Sea activities should be planned around tides, winds and local weather conditions.
When to visit
Lamu can be visited throughout the year. March to May is generally wetter, and boat excursions may be adjusted according to conditions. Heat, humidity and seasonal winds should also be considered when choosing travel dates.
Getting there
Lamu’s airport is located on Manda Island. Reaching the Old Town, Shela and most hotels requires a boat transfer, which is best arranged in advance. Several nights allow enough time to combine the island’s cultural heritage with a relaxed beach stay.
