Bora Bora holidays: lagoon resorts and overwater bungalows

Bora Bora is a volcanic island in French Polynesia, surrounded by a turquoise lagoon and small coral islets known as motu. Its defining experiences include views of Mount Otemanu, overwater bungalows, secluded resorts and days organised around the lagoon.

The island is particularly well suited to honeymoons, special occasions and quiet beach holidays. Families can also enjoy Bora Bora, although hotel selection should account for children’s accommodation policies, water depth around the villa, beach access and suitable resort facilities.

The best time to visit Bora Bora

May to October is the drier season, with lower humidity and comfortable conditions for beach days, snorkelling and lagoon trips. Demand is particularly high from June to September, so preferred resorts and overwater bungalow categories should be reserved well in advance.

November to April is warmer and more humid, with a greater chance of tropical showers. This period generally brings fewer visitors and may offer better-value accommodation. Lagoon temperatures remain suitable for swimming throughout the year.

Choosing the right resort and villa

Resorts located on private motu offer greater seclusion and striking views across the lagoon towards Mount Otemanu. However, access to the main island depends on boat transfers. Travellers should check transfer schedules, additional charges and the choice of restaurants available within the resort.

Staying on the main island, particularly around Matira, provides easier access to beaches, local dining and land-based activities. It can be a better option for travellers who do not want to spend the entire stay within one resort.

When comparing overwater bungalows, consider:

  • the view and orientation of the terrace;
  • privacy from neighbouring villas;
  • direct access to the lagoon;
  • water depth around the bungalow;
  • distance from the beach, restaurants and resort facilities.

A beachfront or land-based pool villa may be more practical for families travelling with young children.

Flights and island transfers

Most international itineraries connect through Tahiti, followed by a domestic flight to Bora Bora. Many motu resorts then require a boat transfer. Flight connections should be checked carefully, as some schedules may require an additional night in Tahiti.

Given the long journey, Bora Bora is often combined with Tahiti, Moorea, Taha’a or another island in French Polynesia. A well-planned multi-island itinerary can balance lagoon time with nature, local culture and a wider choice of experiences.

What to include in the itinerary

Bora Bora’s main activities take place on the lagoon. Options include private boat or catamaran trips, snorkelling around coral gardens, kayaking, paddleboarding and visits to secluded motu. Guided excursions also provide opportunities to observe rays, tropical fish and other marine life in their natural environment.

Time on the water can be combined with Matira Beach, a tour of the main island, cultural sites and local dining. Tailor-made planning helps coordinate the season, flights, resort location, villa category, boat transfers and activities without unnecessary travel.
