Tailor-made holidays in Noonu Atoll

Noonu Atoll lies in the northern part of the Maldives. Its islands are farther from Velana International Airport than the resorts surrounding Malé, while the hotels are separated by considerable stretches of ocean. The region features leading resorts with spacious beach and overwater villas, large lagoons, dive centres and varied activity programmes.

Noonu Atoll suits journeys for two, family holidays and longer stays on a single island. The experience depends largely on the chosen resort, including the size of the island, lagoon and house reef conditions, children’s facilities, dining and included services.

Resorts in Noonu Atoll

The atoll is home to Cheval Blanc Randheli, Velaa Private Island and Soneva Jani. Each provides a distinct style of stay.

Cheval Blanc Randheli extends across several islands and combines spacious villas, carefully developed dining, spa programmes and personalised service. The resort works well for both couples and families seeking a large setting with a broad range of activities.

Velaa Private Island places particular emphasis on sport and wellness. Its facilities include a spa, sports courts and a golf academy. The accommodation ranges from beach and overwater villas to larger residences suitable for families and groups.

Soneva Jani is known for its expansive lagoon and spacious overwater villas, some featuring slides leading directly into the ocean. Experiences include children’s programmes, boat trips, astronomy sessions and open-air cinema screenings.

When selecting a resort, it is important to compare more than price and villa size. Bedroom position, water depth, beach access, distance to the house reef and dining arrangements can all affect the stay.

Diving and ocean experiences

The reefs and channels of Noonu Atoll provide opportunities for diving and snorkelling. Sea turtles, rays, reef sharks and schools of tropical fish can be encountered in the surrounding waters. Established dive locations include Orimas Thila and reef sites close to the resort islands.

Snorkelling conditions vary between hotels. Some islands provide direct access to a house reef from the beach or an overwater villa, while others arrange boat trips to the main snorkelling sites. Reef location and seasonal conditions should be checked before confirming a resort.

The itinerary can also include yacht cruises, fishing trips, sandbank visits, water sports or guided excursions with a marine biologist.

The best time to visit Noonu Atoll

November to April generally brings drier, sunnier weather and calmer seas. These months are particularly suitable for beach holidays, snorkelling, diving and yacht trips.

Between May and October, brief tropical showers, stronger winds and more noticeable waves are possible. Air and sea temperatures remain warm throughout the year, while specific diving and boating conditions depend on local currents and weather.

Getting to Noonu Atoll

The main way to reach the resorts of Noonu Atoll is by seaplane from Velana International Airport. Depending on the island and operating route, the flight usually takes around 40–50 minutes. Seaplanes operate during daylight hours only.

Some resorts can also be reached by a domestic flight to Maafaru Airport followed by a speedboat transfer. The most suitable option depends on international flight times, the composition of the travelling party and the location of the hotel.

Yana Luxury Travel can recommend the appropriate resort and villa category, coordinate flights and transfers, and plan the stay around the season and each guest’s interests.
