SAINT-TROPEZ - A small, picturesque town on the Côte d'Azur, a former Greek colony with ancient traditions and its own festivals.
Until the late 19th century, Saint-Tropez was a modest settlement of fishermen and winemakers, although its history dates back to antiquity. The town owes its name to Saint Tropez: a boat carrying the body of a centurion executed under Nero for professing Christianity washed ashore in the bay, where he was buried in a specially built church.
In 1637, the Saint-Tropez fleet, consisting of four ships, utterly defeated a Spanish fleet of twenty ships, marking the most glorious moment in local history. This event is celebrated annually on July 15th with the so-called "Bravada" – a colorful procession through the streets of Saint-Tropez.
Saint-Tropez owes its fame to the artist Paul Signac, who settled here in 1892 and subsequently attracted Matisse, Bonnard, and other artists.
In 1950, the film "And God Created Woman" was filmed here, making Brigitte Bardot a famous actress and Saint-Tropez a renowned resort.
